The best false lashes are the ones that match your eye shape, your natural lash length and the occasion, not the ones with the biggest reviews. A bold strip that looks great on a friend can feel heavy on you.

The short answer: choose lightweight strips for a quick, dramatic look, and cluster lashes for a custom, natural finish that blends with your own. Below I compare the main types, explain materials and wear time, and share how I choose lashes for clients in my Queens studio.

What are the best false lashes?

The best false lashes for most people are soft, lightweight strips or clusters with a flexible band and a curl that suits the eye. Heavy, stiff lashes are the most common reason a set feels uncomfortable or lifts at the corner.

Instead of a single winner, use these questions to narrow it down:

  • What is the occasion, and how long will you wear them?
  • How natural do you want to look?
  • Do you wear glasses?
  • How comfortable are you applying them?

A strip is best when you want a full line fast. A set of cluster lashes is best when you want control over where the length goes. Lashes are included with every makeup look I do, so clients usually tell me the mood and I choose the pair.

How do strip lashes compare with cluster lashes?

Strips cover the full lash line in one piece and apply in a minute or two. Clusters are small groups placed one by one, so they take longer but look more custom.

What materials are false lashes made from?

Most modern false lashes are made from synthetic fibers. Marketing names such as silk, faux mink or vegan only describe the look and feel of the fiber, not an animal source in most cases.

Fiber matters less than the way it is cut and curled. A good synthetic lash is soft, holds a curl and is tapered at the end so it looks like a real lash tip. A cheap one is blunt, shiny and stiff.

What to look for

  • A thin, flexible band that bends with your lash line.
  • Tapered tips, not blunt ends.
  • A curl that matches your natural curl, so the two lines blend.
  • A matte finish. Very shiny fibers look obvious in photos.

Cruelty free is also worth checking if it matters to you, since not all brands are. The products I use are hypoallergenic and cruelty free.

Which false lashes suit natural, soft glam and full glam looks?

Match the lash to the look. A natural face needs lashes that read as your own. A full glam face can carry volume and length that would overwhelm a bare face.

Natural and everyday

Choose wispy natural clusters or a short, feathered strip. Keep the length close to your own. Our guide to natural lash clusters shows what to look for.

Soft glam

A medium length strip or a custom set of clusters adds definition without a theatrical look. This pairs with soft glam makeup, my most booked look.

Full glam

Bold, fluffy or dramatic lashes with a cut crease, blended color and bright lip. The lash is part of the design, so the face needs enough product to hold it.

If you want help picking, the best approach is to tell me the outfit and event and I choose the match.

How do you plan a false lash for your eye shape?

Place the length where your eye needs it. Round eyes look more lifted with length at the outer corner, and narrow eyes look more open with length in the center. Hooded eyes usually need lighter lashes and a curl that clears the fold.

This is the idea behind a lash map, a plan of which lengths go where. With clusters you can build one yourself, and our guide to lash map clusters explains how. With strips, trim the outer end if the strip is too long for your eye. A strip that extends past the corner is uncomfortable and looks obvious.

One more tip: always check the lashes in the mirror from the front and from the side before you glue them on.

How long do false lashes last, and what glue should you use?

Strip and cluster lashes are made for a day or a few days, not weeks. Your skin, your glue and your cleaning routine decide how long they stay on. A good adhesive applied sparingly makes the biggest difference.

Wear time for the cluster type is covered in how long cluster lashes last, and the adhesive options are explained in lash glue for clusters. If you wear extensions rather than removable lashes, read how long eyelash extensions last for that comparison.

For any lash, use a small amount of glue, wait until it is tacky and press in place. If your eyes sting, stop and ask a doctor.

How do you take false lashes off and reuse them?

Remove them slowly with a lash safe remover, then clean the old glue off the band and store them in the case. Good strips can be worn several times, but clusters are more delicate.

Never pull. Hold the outer corner, work the glue loose with a damp pad and peel the band away. Our guide to how to remove cluster lashes without losing your own covers the technique in more detail. Do not reuse a lash that is bent or still carries glue you cannot remove. Keep your brows tidy as well, because the lash and brow frame each other, and you can see the options at brow and lash services in Queens.

Questions readers ask

How do you remove false lashes at home?

Soak a cotton pad in a lash safe remover or oil, hold it over the closed eye for a few seconds, then peel the band from the outer corner. Never pull dry.

How many times can you reuse false lashes?

Good strips can be worn a few times if you clean the band and store them flat. Clusters usually last fewer wears, and any lash that is bent should go.

When were false lashes invented?

Artificial lashes have been around for roughly a century, appearing in film and fashion in the early 1900s. The soft synthetic strips we wear now came much later.

How do you remove lash glue from false lashes?

Peel the dried glue from the band with clean tweezers, taking care not to bend the fibers. Soak first in a little remover if it is stubborn.

Do false lashes go above or below natural lashes?

Strips sit on the lash line, on top of the skin right at the base of your lashes. Clusters are normally placed beneath your natural lashes so they blend.
